Who We Are
Charis Community Church is a Gospel-Centered, Disciple-Making, Church-Planting Church
No matter who you are or where you are coming from, you are welcome. Whether you are struggling with doubt or strong in your faith, you are welcome. If you have no church or religious background, or have been a part of a church your whole life, you are welcome. Our fundamental belief is that everyone needs Jesus, including us. Nobody needs Jesus more than we do, but everyone needs Jesus as much as we do. Charis is a community of good news for sinners who need a Savior.
Charis (pronounced "Care-Us"), is the Greek word for grace. We chose grace to describe our church, because God's grace is the best way to explain the undeserved, unmerited hope we have for loving God and loving our neighbors as God has commanded us. The sad reality is we all fall short of God's call to be perfect. Yet, God became human in the person of Jesus Christ. He was the only one in all of history to be perfectly full of grace and truth. His life was without sin and fully devoted to God. His death on a cross was sufficient to fully forgive all of our sin and end its power over us. And, his resurrection proved he, alone, was able to conquer death. Through Jesus' life, death, and resurrection, his life can now become your life. And, you can be increasingly like him. How? The grace of God.
The whole Christian life is lived by grace alone through faith alone in [Jesus] Christ alone...but not alone. God's grace has provided a community.
Community Church follows "Charis", because we are a community formed by God's grace. Another name for this community is church. The church is the ever-growing community of God that is formed around the grace of God through Jesus Christ. God has patterned the church after the life of Jesus. Therefore, the church is to sacrificially and generously serve one another, love one another, and encourage one another by pointing each person to the grace and truth of God. And, the church is to serve, love, and encourage our neighbors, co-workers, and complete strangers with the message and ministry of Jesus Christ.
Trunk-or-Treat at Charis
Saturday, October 30 3-5pm
Join us Saturday, October 30 from 3-5pm in the Charis parking lot for our first-ever Trunk-or-Treat!
What is Trunk-or-Treating? Together with your family, group of friends, or Gospel Community, deck out your trunk with Halloween decorations and get some candy. On the 30th, bring your kids and/or your friends' kids and let them wander from car to car, collecting candy at each stop. (Feel free to Google fun trunk ideas or check out places like Party City or Amazon if you want to skip the creativity and buy a "trunk-or-treat kit"!)
Two special things:
1. Bring your canned goods! We'll have a trunk to drop off canned goods that we'll donate to Center for Hope.
2. We'll have a prize for the best-decorated trunk. So let the trunk-or-treat planning begin!
If you're planning to participate or have questions, please email email@example.com.
Watch Pastor Jon Bricker talk about Charis’ story
Pastors and Staff
Jon oversees the Vision, Teaching, and Gospel Communities of Charis. After graduating from Illinois State University in 1999, Jon taught sixth grade for two years. He then began a college ministry on the campus of ISU, which he led until he helped plant Charis in 2007. Jon and his wife, Beth, have been married since 2001, and are the parents of 3 boys: Noah, Eli, and Liam.
Jon enjoys talking about the Gospel of Jesus, playing with his kids, dating his wife, and hanging with friends. He also loves BBQ and reading.
Favorite Scripture: "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit." - Romans Chapter 8, Verses 1-4
Ryan has been married to Stephanie since July 2013. Ryan and Stephanie have a son, Jace. Ryan leads the teen bible study with his wife. He is an elder at Charis, and leads a gospel community in his neighborhood.
Ryan is an 8th Grade math teacher at Bloomington Junior High. He loves Chicago sports, spending time with family, reading, and can quote nearly every line of The Office.
Favorite Scripture: "But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which He loved us, even while we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ" – Ephesians 2:4-5
Beau currently serves as an elder and treasurer for Charis. He also helps out in the Kidz ministry and wherever else there may be a need. Beau and his wife, On-E, have been members of Charis since 2015, when they moved back to the Bloomington/Normal area. They have been married since 2002 and have twin kids, Wilson and Maddie.
Outside of work and church, Beau enjoys spending time with his family and friends and doing just about anything outside: running, biking, kayaking, skiing, hunting, and fishing.
Favorite Scripture: "That according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God." - Ephesians 3:16–19
Craig oversees Ministry Development and Mission for Charis. Craig and his wife, Lisa, have been married since December 2003 and are the parents of two children, Andrew and Maryjane. Craig enjoys bicycling and swimming. He loves working outdoors in his yard and spending time with his family.
Favorite Scripture: "And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." Hebrews Chapter 11, Verse 6
Autumn currently serves as an Administrative Assistant for Charis. She and her husband, Mike, began attending Charis during college at Illinois State University and have been members of Charis since 2013. Autumn is also involved in serving college students in Bloomington Normal by volunteering with her college ministry. Autumn and her husband, Mike, love being parents to their daughter Kennedy.
Autumn enjoys being around people, studying scripture, and going on adventures!
Charis Kidz Director
Danielle currently serves as Director of Charis Kidz which entails overseeing the Infant through 4th grade Charis Kidz classrooms. Her responsibilities include scheduling volunteers for Sunday mornings, coordinating special events, serving alongside our volunteers monthly and a bunch of other small details that help our Kidz program run smoothly.
She and her husband, Justin were part of the original core group of people who planted Charis in August 2007. Danielle and Justin have been married since October of 2005, and enjoy being parents to Blake, Emma, and Adyn. Danielle enjoys being with family, fitness classes, getting the opportunity to go out with friends, and Target.
Favorite Scripture: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs Chapter 3, Verses 5-6
We believe that a clear and reasonable expression of our faith is The Gospel Coalition Statement of Faith. This confession will be an aid to us in times of controversy, a confirmation of our faith, and a means of building us up towards Christ-likeness in helping us understand the riches of God’s grace and truth revealed to us through the Holy Scriptures.
We meet every Sunday morning at 9:00am and 10:45am for worship at 1306 E Empire St, Bloomington, IL 61701
Bring a friend, bring a bible (if you have one) and dress casually. Most people wear jeans. And yes, we've got coffee, orange juice, and donuts if you miss breakfast! If this is your first time, stop by our Welcome table on your way in to introduce yourself and get a free gift.
Check Out Charis Kidz
If you have young children, we'd love for you to check out Charis Kidz during the 9am service. Your kids will love it, and you can have the peace of mind you're leaving your kids in safe (and friendly!) hands. Plan to arrive a few minutes early to get them checked in.
We invite you to connect with a Gospel Community.
Gathering on Sunday morning is one vital part of how we live, where we come together to worship God through things like song, prayer, preaching, & communion. But we worship God every day of the week, too.
We do this primarily through Gospel Communities, which are small groups throughout Bloomington/Normal who pursue God's mission, encourage each other, push each other toward holiness, and live everyday life together as we learn how the gospel seeps into every aspect of life.
Gospel Communities regularly meet together once a week to spur one another on, eat together, and to live on mission together. Please feel free to visit any of our Gospel Communities, or contact us if you have questions or need help finding one.
Thank you for your interest in our Gospel Communities.

As a church family, we want to intentionally invest in our children just as Jesus did.
Our desire is to partner with parents to nurture, shepherd and disciple children for the glory of God. Charis Kidz provides opportunities for children to gather and learn about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the essential truths, which will shape and guide them throughout their lives. By teaching our kids to know, love, and follow Jesus, we anticipate our children will find joy and purpose in continuing Jesus’ mission (John 20:21) of transforming our community and world for the glory of God.
Our toddler through 5th grade uses the Gospel Project curriculum, a chronological, Christ-centered Bible study that engages children through Bible videos, discussions, and activities.
5th Sundays are reserved for a special time of Family worship. Infant and Toddler classes will remain open, but preschool through elementary will spend 5th Sundays worshipping with the rest of the church family in the auditorium.
If you'd like to serve in Charis Kids, please fill out this application.
