1 Corinthians 1:18:  The word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Does the cross ever seem folly to you?  Like it's not the answer?  It's too simple, or it's not enough.  It's offensive or it's just plain nonsense.

More often than not, I skip the cross and instead strive to be a good person or to do better next time.  If only I could get it right. Some days I lean the other way, I even think my sins are too great and too many for the cross to bear. If only I could make things right again, get another chance (as though I could get it right).  There must be something more I can do than just bank on the cross.

But this verse reminds me, the cross is the POWER of God.  The cross is the only thing that saves us and makes us right with God.  Nothing else will fix us, nothing. Jesus has righted every wrong in this world! Jesus is my 'getting it right'. He did what I could not and cannot do, so that I could be made right with God.

Why do we preach things other than the gospel to ourselves?  Christ crucified is what saves us and sustains us!  Jesus is where true power lies.  We don't need the wisdom of this world, we need Jesus.

I've heard Charis pray, "Lord, let us keep the main thing, the main thing."  Amen!  Church family, please preach the gospel... preach Christ crucified to yourself, to me, to each other, and to the world, for it is the power of God.
